clx_logo150x180Clorox bleach – I have a big bottle of it in my laundry room, odds are you do too.

Clorox announced a $0.74 quarterly dividend today payable Aug 8 for shareholders of record on July 23. That’s a 4.2% raise from the previous $0.71 quarterly dividend. I know, not a spectacular dividend growth rate for this year especially compared to last year’s 10.9% increase, but companies generally don’t make large increases every year. As an old coworker of mine used to say: “It beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick,” and it still beats the average inflation rate of 3.7%.

The year-over-year dividend growth rate (assuming another $0.74 dividend payment in Nov) comes to a 7.4% increase. The following chart shows the actual annual dividend growth rate percentages, with a 15 year average of 9.5%. This year’s increase makes 37 consecutive years that Clorox has increased its dividend payment. A phenomenal record for this rather boring consumer staple company founded in 1913!
