Expanded Dividend Champions Screener

June 10, 20182 Comments

What used to be listed as the ‘Wide Moat Dividend Champions’ screener has been expanded to include all dividend champions (companies that have raised their dividend for 25 or more years) with a few notable exceptions:

  • Companies that have increased their dividend 50 or more years, are located in the ‘Dividend Kings’ screener
  • The 15 dividend champions in the Banking industry were not included, because their industry financials do not match up with dividend growth stocks, which is why a lot of their metrics are routinely n/a

I have been planning to list all of the dividend champions (not just those with wide economic moats) for some time, but it is big time investment to maintain such a list. Since it was always readily available at the end of each month in David Fish’s ‘U.S. Dividend Champions’ Excel spreadsheet, (know as the ‘CCC List’). The CCC List is where David painstakingly gathered and maintained companies that have increased their dividends 25+ years (Champions), those between 19-10 years (Contenders), and between 9-5 years (Challengers) that he freely contributed to the dividend growth investing community.

Mr. Fish was one of the original dividend growth investors that I learned so much from and I will always be so grateful for his DGI community work and mentoring. Sadly with his recent passing the CCC List is at risk of completely disappearing. I’m hopeful it can continue on to be a benefit and resource to the DGI community. I have reached out to the DGI community and offered to help and possibly arrange for an open-source type of collaborative effort to keep it going.

That said, to be on the safe side I have moved to start tracking at least the Dividend Champions group, located at ‘Screeners > Dividend Champions’ shown with the metrics I follow. To me this is the most important group of stalwart companies dedicated to returning wealth to their share holders through annual dividend increases that the DGI strategy is founded on. Going forward, other noteworthy dividend growth stocks with less than 25 years of consecutive dividend increases will be selected and listed in either the ‘Fast Dividend Growth’ or ‘High Velocity Dividends’ screeners.
